How to Make a DIY Wall Mounted Beer Bottle Opener
I had to make gifts for 2 friends, so I decided to make them both a beer bottle opener. I tailored each one to their style and their decor. One friend is a beer LOVER- so naturally, I used a can of his favorite beer as the cap catcher. The other one was for a friend who is more artistic, so I created the second one with blackboard paint and can be redecorated often. Regardless, they were so easy to make and I think they turned out as great gifts!

Here’s what you need:
- wall mounted bottle opener of your choice
- a piece of wood to mount it to- I used a 1×4″ piece of maple
- clear polyurethane OR chalkboard paint– I used a spray can to keep things easy!
- additional screws for mounting
- chalk
- beer can (drink the beer first!)
- can opener with rotating dial
- sandpaper- 120-220 grit depending on how smooth the wood is
Here’s what you do:
- Cut the wood to the size you want it. I made mine 12″ long.
- Sand the wood to remove all of the rough edges and to make sure it is as smooth as you can get it. The higher the number sandpaper you use, the less coarse it is and will allow for a smoother finish. Remove all traces of the sawdust with a cloth when finished.
- Either use the clear polyurethane or the chalkboard paint to coat the wood. Follow the directions from the manufacturer of the paint you are using.
- Once coated as many times as necessary, and dried, you can mount the bottle opener on the top of the wood. Make sure you leave at least 3/4″ space at the top before mounting it so that you do not split the top of the wood. I am using 2″ screws in these holes because they will mount the wood strait in the wall.
- If you are mounting a can, cut the top off using a regular can opener that has a rotating dial. This will take the top off in seconds, and it won’t leave ANY sharp edges. Next, use a paper hole puncher to create a hole in the can so that it can be mounted on a screw. Mine was ~3/4′ down from the top of the can.
- To mount the can, figure out the placement that the screw needs to be in. Place the can where you want it on the wood, and mark where you want the screw to go through the hole. Drive a 1″ screw into that placement. Make sure that the head of the screw that you use is small enough for the hole in the can. Leave 1/4″ of the screw sticking out the the can to be mounted on it. Hang your can and you now have a cap catcher!
- If you are not using a can but the chalkboard paint, once dried, write a message or draw on the wood! It is bound receive funny messages during gatherings and parties ! Chalk can sit right on the top of the wood once mounted!
Enjoy!
