If you have a dog, you know that their breath can be SO bad! There have been times that Dexter has sent me running in the other direction after breathing on me, gasping for fresh air. Why is the case? Dogs have the same issues as humans when it comes to their mouths. If the plaque, tarter, and bad bacteria aren’t cleaned out of their mouth often regularly, tooth decay, bad breath, and a number of other problems can present themselves. I have made this DIY Natural Dog Toothpaste to use with Dexter. I wanted to use an all natural paste that was effective without allowing him to ingest the ones sold commercially These are usually laden with synthetic-chemicals, colors, and additives. In fact, the last tube of doggie toothpaste contained about 20 ingredients, some of which I couldn’t pronounce the names of. In about 3 minutes flat, I whipped up a batch of this DIY Natural Toothpaste. Everyday (I like to say everyday but in reality- every few days) I “brush” Dexter’s teeth to help them stay pearly white, and to not scare me away with his breath. 🙂

Here’s what you need:
- 2 1/2 tablespoons (for the base)
- 1 teaspoon (a mild abrasive to scrape away plaque and tartar)
- 1 teaspoon organic, (freshens and neutralizes breath)
- 2 drops Peppermint Young Living Essential Oil *** Peppermint is a SAFE oil for your dog to ingest. (freshens breath)
***** I ONLY use Young Living Essential Oils, especially when using them with Dexter. They are the highest quality, PURE, cold-pressed or steam distilled (meaning NO chemicals are used in their production like most store-bought ones), and SAFE. Using SAFE oils with dogs is SO important because they metabolize things differently than people. PLEASE DON’T USE ANY ESSENTIAL OILS THAT YOUR DOG WILL INGEST UNLESS YOU KNOW THAT THEY ARE CHEMICAL FREE!!!!! Young Living Essential Oils go through STRICT testing and monitoring procedures to insure their purity and content. They are a Start to Seed company which means that you can trace the lots of oils back to the very fields they were grown on, therefore their production process as well. Here’s what you do:
- Mix all ingredients together in a glass bowl.
- Transfer to a glass jar, and store the toothpaste for up to a month.
Use a small amount of toothpaste and rub in a circular motion on your pooch’s teeth to keep they bright and white! I like to let Dexter just lick a very small amount before I start brushing so that he thinks it is a treat. Therefore, he’s tolerant of us poking around in his mouth. 🙂

Do you have to use the essential oil? Or, can I just make it without?
You can make it without, but the oil REALLY helps to freshen things up.:)
I think ill use peppermint extract instead of essential oil. Seems safer to me in my head…i could be wrong?
NOOOOOOOOOO! Please don’t use extract on dogs! An extract is virtually flavored alcohol!!!! Plants are soaked in alcohol and the flavor is created. An essential oil is Pure and should have no additives. Many store-bought essential oils are not pure despite what they say. (There loopholes in regulations from governing bodies). Young Living essential oils are 100% Pure and they undergo a rigorous 28 point quality assurance protocol. They are either steam distilled or cold pressed. These are safe and you monitor the production by visiting YL farms around the world. Please ONLY use pure peppermint essential oil with your dog! If you have any other questions, let me know!
I just got my chihuahua,Sam the first of April. His “Daddy” my ex had him since the first Oct,2012.He neglected his dental care, now he won’t let ANYTHING in his mouth unless it’s food or a treat. Any ideas?
I let dexter lick a little bit of the toothpaste before I brush. THen he thinks it IS a treat of some sort! 🙂 Maybe try that?!?!?!?
Hi Tara, I have 1 question before I (would LOVE to) try this; did you start out gradually with Dexter w/this recipe? I am concerned about toxicity reactions with natural oils, i.e., possible contamination.
Hi Sharon! Thanks for visiting! I did use just a little bit at first and then increased the amount gradually. I am not sure what you mean by contamination….. Peppermint oil is safe to use on dogs when diluted properly. Please do make sure that you use an oil that is SAFE and is steam distilled or cold pressed without the use of chemicals for production if a dog is going to ingest it. Young Living IS, and that’s why I use them! Many oils that you can get in the store or online are cheaper, because they are produced with chemicals and the unknown…. but read the labels carefully! Many store bought oils say they are pure, but then have a warning on them that it can cause irritation to the skin and warnings NOT to ingest! Not all oils are as pure as they say they are, thanks to weird loopholes from the governing bodies! Just want the best for all pooches! 🙂
I love this and need to try this!! The vet wanted a crazy amount for cleaning their teeth 😳 Thank you for sharing
